Preparation for surgery
In order to understand the procedure and recovery afterwards, it is recommended to discuss all the details and steps with a qualified specialist prior the surgery.
After the implantation procedure
After bone conduction implant surgery, medical staff will apply a bandage to protect the incision.
A bandage may be indicated for a day or two by the medical staff, who normally provide instructions on how to care for the implant site after the bandage is removed.
When the bandage is removed, there may be some swelling around the incision. Once it heals and the swelling disappears, you may have a slightly raised bump where surgeons have placed the implant. This area is typically covered by hair.
It's important to follow doctor's instructions regarding rest and recovery after bone conduction implant surgery.
Here are some recommendations about the recovery period
- Follow the doctor’s instructions and take medication as directed.
- The patient may not be able to drive after the procedure, so someone else might be better indicated to bring the patient home.
- Family can help after the procedure, with daily life tasks for instance, to allow you to recuperate.
- The doctor may indicate that it's possible to shower and wash the hair after one week after surgery, being careful to avoid water entering the ear.
- A healthy diet and plenty of water may also be recommended by a doctor.
How long does it take to recover?
The surgeon will want the incision to heal before fitting a sound processor for the first time. Healing will depend on the technology chosen, but it generally may take 2-4 weeks.
The doctor is best indicated to decide when it is safe to return to work or other activities.
