Mayumi’s parents searched the internet for treatment options after she was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. This is how they discovered cochlear implants.
Initially Carmela says she was hesitant for her daughter to have surgery but felt strongly that it was the best option. Mayumi received her implant just after her first birthday.
When Mayumi became frightened after a loud clap of thunder, Carmela knew her daughter’s cochlear implant were working.
Now, at age six, Mayumi is the family’s entertainer, singing and dancing every night. And Carmela says she’s proud of her decision.
